Lancaster high street cake shop closes its doors

The Russell's of Lancaster shop has closed

A cake shop and bakery on a Lancaster high street has closed its doors.

Russell's Celebration Cakes opened in part of the former Gorrill's of Lancaster in 2021.

But this week it was announced that the shop has closed.

"The lease has been taken by another business and I wish them all the best," said a post on the Russell's Facebook page.

"I will be in the shop clearing out, tidying up and getting all nostalgic about the hundreds of memories, moments and madness that has happened in my little bakery.

"Any orders for collection will be rearranged as a drop off or delivery but if you're in the diary, you're in the diary!

"Thank you for the memories. Goodbye Lancaster."

Russell's is continuing as an online and delivery only service.

The shop was opened by Rebecca Russell from Heysham.

Rebecca trained as a chef at Lancaster and Morecambe College, and then worked as a pastry chef at restaurants and hotels, before setting up the business specialising in creating cakes for special occasions, initially working from her home kitchen.

She then baked from the Penny Street premises, offering takeaway homemade cakes, freshly-made sandwiches and high-quality coffee.

The shop opened after the 129-year-old Gorrill’s of Lancaster gift and homeware shop closed in 2020 following the retirement of its owners.
