Man receives medical treatment after vehicle fire on M6 near Lancaster

Emergency services were called and there were major traffic tailbacks after a vehicle fire on the M6 near Lancaster.

Police were called to the incident between Junction 34 (Lancaster) and Junction 35 (Carnforth) just after 1pm on Friday.

A man was receiving medical treatment, said a Lancashire Police spokesperson.

The M6 was closed in both directions between Junctions 34 and 36 for a time before reopening northbound, and then fully reopening by 5pm.

There were severe traffic delays in the area on Friday afternoon.

"We anticipate that the motorway will be closed for some time whilst we assess the situation," said a spokesperson for Lancashire Police.

"In the meantime, we’d recommend looking for an alternative route, such as the A6."

Anyone with information or footage is asked to call 101 quoting log 0647.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said on Friday afternoon: "At 13:06 on 28th February 2025, four fire engines from Lancaster, Morecambe, Bolton-le-Sands, and Carnforth attended a vehicle fire on the M6 southbound between junctions 35 and 34.

"One casualty was treated by North West Ambulance Service. The motorway will remain closed into the evening. Emergency services remain in attendance."
