Unemployed man bags £1m from £1 stake

February 28, 2020

An unemployed man from Scotland has recently bagged himself a £1 million prize from his tiny £1 stake, to go from rags to riches in a matter of minutes. The Scottish man plans to celebrate his big win by taking his family out for an expensive steak dinner.

The Scottish man, in his 30s from Edinburgh, who wishes to remain anonymous, is the first-ever person to win £1 million from a £1 stake on William Hill’s daily 49s draw. The punter visited his local William Hill store on a daily basis and proceeded to use the same numbers every time - 1, 7, 16, 22, 31 and 44 - and finally, his persistence paid off.

The Scottish punter plans on treating his family to a ‘really expensive steak dinner’ and buying a new house with his winnings.

The last big win to be won from the William Hill store based in Leith was around two years ago when another lucky punter won £682,282 on the horses from a stake of £9.20. With all this money being won in Scotland it seems to be a lucky place to wager your money.

A William Hill spokesman said: “We have never had a betting shop customer win a seven-figure sum in Scotland, so this is a huge milestone.”

Fred Craggs sits as the first person ever to win £1 million from a land-based William Hill store in the United Kingdom when the punter from North Yorkshire managed to correctly back eight winners in a 50p accumulator he placed back in February 2008.

However, the achievement of being the first person in England to win over £1 million from a land-based store sits with Stuart Bolland, from Cadishead, Greater Manchester, who won a total of £1,132,657. Mr Bolland picked six correct winners on the Scoop6 in November 6th 2004, winning over £1 million from a £2 stake.
