Morecambe are a professional football club that are based in Lancashire that is currently competing in the fourth tier of English football, which is otherwise known as League Two. Morecambe have been in action for a total of 99 years with the being founded on the 7th May 2020. When being founded in 1920, Morecambe played their home fixtures at Christie Park before they moved into their new and current ground in 2010 which is known as the Globe Arena. Morecambe are often referred to by their nickname the ‘Shrimps’ due to their coastal towns cuisine and a shrimp can be found on the clubs crest. The Shrimps are currently owned by the Bond Group Investments while both Graham Howse and Rod Taylor sit as the clubs chairman. Derek Adams has the role of the club manager and has been there since the start of 2019.

 

After being founded in 1920, Morecambe were entered into the Lancashire Combination League where they spent a whopping 48 years. During this long stretch of 48 years, Morecambe managed to secure five league titles in 1925, 1962, 1963, 1967 and 1968. After claiming their fifth league title in the Lancashire Combination League, the Shrimps joined the newly formed Northern Premier League. In 1974, Morecambe lifted the FA Trophy after a successful campaign in the cup and went onto win the Northern Premier League President’s Cup in 1992. The Shrimps gained promotion from the Northern Premier League in 1995 after finishing second place under the management of Jim Harvey. Morecambe spent the next 12 seasons in the Conference before finally gaining promotion into the Football League by winning the 2007 play-off final. The Shrimps came close to gaining promotion into League One during their 2009/10 campaign when they finished fourth, but they failed to pass the play-off semi-final.

 

Since the early 1990s, Morecambe have been competing in a furious rivalry with their local neighbours Accrington Stanley. For a long period of time, Morecambe failed to get the better of Accrington Stanley, as they failed to beat them on 16 occasions after gaining promotion into League Two. The Shrimps put an end to this run in 2015 when an Aaron Wildig goal saw them win 1-0. Morecambe shares other local rivalries with Lancaster City, Barrow, Fleetwood Town, Southport and Kendal Town.
