Morecambe Winter Gardens gets £123K ceiling grant

November 05, 2019

The Winter Gardens in Morecambe has been awarded a £123,312 grant towards restoring its ceiling.

The historic theatre was given the money by Historic England and now the Grade II* listed building's owners need just a further £30,000 to pay for the repairs.

The Winter Gardens Preservation Trust said it was confident the rest of the money for repairs to the fibrous plaster ceiling could be raised from other sources.

Funding will cover the cost of project management, structural surveys, and repair of damaged and missing tiles at the back of the upper gallery known as 'the Gods'.

The cash will begin the process of bringing the Winter Gardens auditorium back to its full capacity of 2,500 instead of its current 700.
