Tributes paid to men who died in Morecambe club fire

Tributes have been paid to two men who died after a fire at a Morecambe social club.

Messages of condolence and support have flooded social media after the blaze at the Gordon Club on Springfield Street in the West End.

Police named the two men as John McCartney, 60, and Philip Townsend, known locally as Tony, 70.

They were rescued from the building by firefighters but died a short time later. 

"Their families have been informed and being supported by specially trained officers," said a police spokesman.

"Our thoughts remain with them."

Coun David Whitaker, mayor of Lancaster, said: "The thoughts of the whole council are with both families and all those whose lives have been affected by this terrible tragedy.

"I'd also like to extend our sincere thanks to the brave members of the emergency services whose swift actions helped to prevent the fire from spreading and potentially further fatalities from occurring."

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire which broke out on Wednesday afternoon.
